MEPCO Green Meter – Net Metering in Pakistan

Electricity prices in Pakistan are rising every month, and for many middle- and lower-income families, it’s becoming harder to manage household expenses. A major part of our salary goes to the electricity bill.

But there’s a smart solution — solar energy with MEPCO’s Net Metering (Green Meter). With a properly installed solar system, not only can you reduce your bill, but you can also sell extra electricity back to MEPCO and earn credits or cash.

What is a Net Meter (Green Meter)?

A Net Meter (also known as a Green Meter) is a special digital meter that records both the electricity you consume and the extra electricity your solar system sends to the national grid.

💡 How it works:

  • During sunny hours, your solar panels generate electricity.
  • If your system produces more than you use, the extra power is sent back to the grid through the net meter.
  • At night or on cloudy days, you can draw back electricity from the grid.
  • The net meter keeps track of units sent vs units received, and MEPCO adjusts your bill accordingly.

Example:

Let’s say in one month:

  • Units sent to the grid: 150
  • Units used from the grid: 80
  • Net saved units = 70

These 70 units are credited to your account — you can either sell them to MEPCO or keep them for future use, like in the winter months.

How to Apply for Mepco Green Meter in Pakistan?

If you already have a solar system installed, here’s how you can apply for a Net Meter:

  1. Visit your nearest MEPCO Subdivision Office.
  2. Collect and fill out the Net Metering Application Form.
  3. Submit the required documents along with the form.
  4. MEPCO will review your application and inform you within 5 working days.
  5. If approved, MEPCO will issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) and forward it to NEPRA.

After NEPRA’s approval, MEPCO will install the Green Meter at your home.

Required Documents for Net Metering

To apply for Net Metering, you’ll need the following:

Other Requirements for Net Meter Installation

Before you apply, make sure you meet these technical requirements:

1. Grid Connectivity

You must have an active electricity connection. Your solar system should be connected to the local distribution transformer through the MEPCO grid.

2. 3-Phase Electricity Meter

Your home should have a 3-phase meter connection, which allows two-way flow of electricity to and from the grid.

3. Minimum 3kW Solar System

Your solar system must produce at least 3 kilowatts (kW) of electricity. Also, make sure your daily usage is less than what your solar system generates.
